Choosing your van
Pick the right vehicle and size · drive variant, and set the insulation thickness your layout will be planned against.
The van picker
VanPlot ships real interior dimensions for around 30 vans — the Fiat Ducato and its Boxer/Jumper/ProMaster siblings, Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, VW Crafter, Renault Trafic, Vito/Metris and more. To keep that manageable, the picker works in two stages: choose the vehicle first, then that model's size · drive variant (for example L3H2 · FWD).
Under the picker you'll see the variant's interior length × width × height and its approximate payload — the planning numbers the whole app works from.
- When creating a project, pick vehicle and variant right in the New Project form.
- In the editor, open the Body menu in the toolbar to change either at any time — your items automatically re-settle into the new interior.
- Switching vehicle keeps your size · drive selection when the new model offers the same one — handy for comparing the same footprint across brands.
- Not sure between two lengths? Build in the shorter one first; growing into a longer van never clips anything.
Insulation thickness
Insulation eats interior space, so VanPlot models it up front. The Insul. field at the left of the toolbar sets your insulation thickness in millimetres (0–200). Every wall and the ceiling move inward by that amount: items clamp to the reduced interior, the Max buttons fill to the insulated walls, and the editor draws a teal inner outline showing the usable space.
- Drag the Insul. label left or right to scrub the value, scroll over the field to step it, or click and type an exact number.
- Hold Shift while scrubbing for 10× steps, or Alt for fine steps.
- A typical camper build uses 40–60 mm on the walls — set it before you start placing furniture so widths are honest from day one.
Beyond the vehicle: the body itself
The Body menu also controls how the van is drawn and cut — panel-van vs box-body style, exterior paint, per-panel visibility with camera auto-hide, and exactly-sized window, roof-fan, and hole cutouts. All of that has its own article: see The van body & openings.
